Two new families are cruising around our
neighborhood nowadays. At least eight falcons have made our
tall trees their homes. It all started with two nests built
high in our treetops. Then came babies, lots of feeding and
flight lessons. Falcon-calls permeate the neighborhood while
they swoop, play and catch their prey. Hopefully, our past
squirrel residents have moved on to different trees and haven't
become food for our falcons! Small birds and rodents are
definitely not safe here! Our falcon families seem to feel
very safe, however, comfortably watching us as we watch them....

FALCON or COOPER'S HAWK?
- July 11, 2011 |
|
The nest in front of my
house is inhabited again! Situated
about 50 feet high in the crotch of a tall
tree, the nest now has at least three babies
peeking over its sides. From a
distance, the babies look like big soft
marshmallows with black eyes. Whether
they are falcons or hawks, I'm not sure.
I've looked at photos all over the Internet,
trying to identify them. The prairie
falcon and Cooper's hawk look very similar.
If anyone can specifically identify these
visitors, pointing out the difference
between the two, I would appreciate it.

Looking at You!! -
August 1
Our visiting raptor
babies went from white fuzzy balls of fluff to streamlined
flyers in barely over a month's time. Now they're streaking
through our neighborhood, testing out their flying and hunting
skills.
