Parent and Community Fair:
An Informative Night at Carrington Elementary School

March 27-2008

The parents and community of Carrington enjoyed a real treat on Thursday evening, March 27th from 6:00-8:30 p.m. at Carrington Elementary School. It was an entertaining, educational evening for both parents and children. A light lunch and coffee were available as parents browsed among the informational booths. Then, the keynote speaker, Kathy Gewont, a school psychologist, talked about "Attention and the Role of Executive Functions of the Brain" from 6:30-7:15 p.m. After her presentation, the community attended a number of break-out sessions which took place from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Topics which are pertinent and informative for today's parents were presented and discussed by knowledgeable speakers.

While parents and other community participants were listening to the speaker and attending break-out sessions, the Carrington Youth Center  provided child-care and entertainment for school-aged students (K-6) from 6:0-8-30 p.m. They had fun activities for the children as well as treats and a movie.

Added Note: Students are collecting canned goods to donate to the Food Pantry (canned fruit being particularly needed). As well, they are having an aluminum can collection contest to benefit the playground fund, so gather up those cans and bring them in!

Library Open House

On Tuesday, April 15th, our Carrington City Library celebrated National Library Week. It was a cozy, inviting scene, with comfy chairs, yummy treats and pleasant hostesses.  Lenore Franchuk, our City Librarian, welcomed everyone as Donna Dunn and Illa Zink, two of our Library Board members, chatted with visitors.

Donna Dunn, a library board member, sits in a cozy corner of the library as she greets visitors.

As visitors looked at the antique radio collection, and browsed through the books that were for sale, Mrs. Franchuk explained that their online library service connects Carrington to a seemingly  unlimited source of books and reference materials.  For people who love books and hands-on reading and research, the Carrington City Library is definitely the place to be!

Illa Zink helps serve visitors while community members chat and look at books.

The Carrington Health Center Ladies Auxiliary Put Together a Great

Taco-in-a-Bag Luncheon!

On Thursday, April 17th, the CHC volunteers were cheerful, organized and helpful as they served their customers... and the food was YUMMY!

Friends visited and enjoyed a meal together at the Holy Family Villa.  Families brought their children for lunch.  Take-out meals were constantly streaming out the door.  It was a great success!  The Ladies Auxiliary would like to thank everyone for supporting their Relay for Life efforts.

Carrington Health Center
Appreciation Dinner for
Auxiliary and Volunteers

On Tuesday evening, April 22nd there was a great turnout for the CHC Appreciation Dinner for the Ladies Auxiliary and volunteers who helped out during the year.

The Holy Family Villa was filled with guests in a beautifully decorated restaurant-like setting.

After guests dined on a wonderful meal provided by the CHC Dietary, they were entertained by Jenee Kraemer and her father, Pastor Jim Kraemer.

Then, Dorothy Fenske introduced Mary Ann Sheets-Hanson, the director of Asante, who gave a presentation about the villages that she works with in Africa.

She and her husband provide an outlet for the all the wonderful hats, dresses, batik work, stationery, carvings and other art work that the African ladies create. It is their mission, or service, and all the money that is earned is sent back to the villagers in Africa.

At the end of the program, everyone enjoyed browsing and shopping among the colorful African clothing and art pieces. Many of the Auxiliary volunteers had fun modeling the hats and clothing, and a great time was had by all!

Putnam House Wine Tasting:

"California Dreaming"

This popular Putnam House wine tasting event on Friday, June 13th, featured a wide variety of wines from California.

Worries about the weather alleviated when the sun peeked through and booths were able to set up on the front lawn.

John Crowston and Kerry Wicks of Jamestown entertained on the front porch while guests sampled wines and appetizers.

The duo played a variety of acoustic music and welcome ‘jammers’ while folks visited and enjoyed the music and pleasant company.

Afterwards, the evening ended with an auction with all proceeds going toward upkeep of the Putnam House.
