Many thanks to Ron Duque who was kind enough to send me some photos that he took of the Northern Lights on the evening of Thursday, March 8th.  He says that the show got more intense as time passed after midnight.  Also, he thinks there will be another chance to see more auroras late Saturday evening till Sunday morning. Dolly's Slippers

Dolly Footitt, a delightful 97-year-old in our community, is constantly busy helping others.  She is also very busy making comfy house slippers from all kinds of colorful, warm polyesters.  To order a pair of slippers, just give Dolly a call at 652-2235, and you can arrange to look at and choose from her ever-changing collection.  Or, you can simply tell her a color theme, and she will send you a pair of slippers in the mail ($2 shipping).  She is charging $10 a pair, money which will mostly go toward the baked goods which she provides for many community service projects.

Note: If you have polyester material/clothing which you would like to donate to Dolly, she will gladly accept it and do a great job of recycling it!

Build It and They Will Come

Foster County Independent

May 7, 2012

Editorial by Allen V. Stock

There's a phrase that comes out often, I think it was from a movie long ago: "Build it and they will come."

That phrase came to me the other day as I remembered back when plans were first prepared for the CrossRoads Golf Club now located north of the city. I sat on that original committee and following meeting after meeting and year after year, the new 18-hole course was developed.

And, they have come to play the course. From all over the state, many other states and even foreign countries, golfers have played the excellent facility located to the north. Many, if not all, have commented on the excellent layout and just how supreme are the fairways and greens.

Lots of TLC and hard work each year by the grounds keepers and manager have made this one of the finest in the state of North Dakota.  More...

Measure 2:

Eliminating Property Taxes

in North Dakota

On Monday, April 16th, there was an interesting informational meeting at the Armory regarding eliminating property taxes in North Dakota.  The main speaker, Charlene Nelson, co-authored the book Property Tax Revolution: It's Our Home, Not Theirs! - Abolishing Property Taxes in North Dakota.  A large crowd was present to hear Nelson's thoughts on the subject, and several were there to ask pointed questions... questions which she didn't hesitate to answer.

According to Ron Paul, who wrote a Foreward to Nelson's book, "The property tax is the most complex, burdensome, costly, and unfair tax imposed by state and local government.  there cannot be true liberty when citizens are not secure in their own homes.  As long as the government can impose taxes on one's property and enforce that exaction by confiscation of the property, there is not real freedom or security."   More...
