Foster County Fair - 2009

June 16, 17, 18, 19

Foster County Fairgrounds Carrington

6-16-09:  Darryl Bulzomi accepts this year's Fair Dedication Award.

The Foster County Fair has come and gone for this year, but many clubs, organizations, businesses and individuals will take away good memories of pertinent activities and events with which they were involved.

Many local businesses and organizations made good contacts with the public by way of their displays/booths in the Commercial Building.

Churches and other groups earned funds for their various community services by providing great-tasting food for fair-goers.

Barbecuers work diligently over their grills.

The community enjoyed all the great entertainment brought to the area: "One Night with Elvis,"
Tina & Lena, and the Gwen Sebastian concert.

Elvis impersonator visits and entertains the CHC Villa before going to the fair.

Local church groups and talented individuals entertained a large audience with religious and gospel music during a "Community Hymn Sing."

Calvary Baptist Church Choir performs at the Sing.

Members of the 4-H Club and Future Farmers of America worked industriously to achieve their goals.

Children were fascinated, as always, with a variety of young, unusual furry critters at the petting zoo.

Carnival lovers were thrilled with the exhilarating rides and challenging games at the Mighty Thomas Carnival.

Let's look forward to another great Foster County Fair next year!

Katie Ralston of Carrington Was Crowned Miss North Dakota

Jun 16, 2009 - 03:51:30 CDT
WILLISTON (AP) - The new Miss North Dakota is ready to start her reign, in a year that will include talking to students about leadership.

Katie Ralston of Carrington was crowned Saturday night in Williston as the pageant marked its 60th anniversary. ...

In her interview with the judges as one of five finalists, Ralston was asked to imagine she were at a party and God showed up at the door. She was asked whether she would have to change what she was saying or doing.

"Absolutely not," she replied and went on to talk about her faith-based family. "It is through God you get through that first year as Miss North Dakota," she said. "I'm so thankful God has been with me every step of the way."  More...

   North Dakota Could Be Back

Farmer moods are perking up in North Dakota's Corn Belt, I discovered on a 600-mile loop driving west and south of Fargo this week. ... The big question will be, will today's three- or four-inch corn be ready to harvest come October?

North Dakota Grows by about 3,500

By The Associated Press - Bismarck

New census estimates show North Dakota grew by about 3,500 people over the past year. As of July First, the state's population was at 641,481. That's up from 637,907 a year earlier.  The increase is less than half of one percent.
State Data Center Director Richard Rathge says the state still ranks 48th in population, but he says North Dakota has grown in four of the past five years.
The census estimates show North Dakota had 9,014 births compared with 5,349 deaths from July 2007 to July 2008. Rathge said the number of births in the state has increased since mid-decade, reversing a nearly 30-year trend.
He says the state ranks No. 1 as having ``the most stable population in the country. He says North Dakota has not seen a population swing of more than 40,000 since 1930.

ND leads nation in binge, underage drinking
Jun 04, 2009 - 04:06:37 CDT
By JAMES MacPHERSON
Associated Press Writer

A new report says North Dakota leads the nation in the rate of binge and underage drinking. It's old news to state officials who have been on a mission to change it, with limited success.
Drinking - even underage and to excess - is "culturally accepted" in North Dakota, authorities say, and many communities' social activities revolve around booze. More than 58 percent of North Dakotans between the ages of 18 and 25 - the highest rate in the U.S. - reported binge drinking. Nearly 29 percent in the 26-and-older category said they had five or more drinks in one sitting, also leading the nation, the report said. A survey last year of North Dakota communities found one-third of the adults thought teenage drinking was acceptable and should be legal, Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem said.
